The reason why winter skin diseases appear in the middle of summer
Atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis … are common diseases in winter due to cold, dry weather. But this summer, the Central Dermatology Hospital received a lot of patients. The number of patients increased by 20 to 30% year-on-year.
Ms. Nguyen Hong Hanh (Hanoi) went to the hospital for a checkup due to recurrent atopic dermatitis. Ms. Hanh said that in previous years, she usually only had rashes in the fall and winter, but this year the situation has not improved.
BSCKII Hoang Thi Phuong – Head of the day inpatient department, National Hospital of Dermatology, said that last year, the hospital received about 30-35 patients with about 3-4 atopic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis. other forms of atopic dermatitis. This year, about 30-35 patients are examined, but there are 10-15 people with this disease.

Talking to PV VietNamNet, Dr. Nguyen Thuy Linh – Deputy Head of the Department of Treatment of Skin Diseases for Women and Children, National Hospital of Dermatology, also shared that in the past, there were some dermatological diseases that were only encountered in winter. including some dermatological diseases such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema in children. However, these diseases appear all year round, even in the summer, the patients do not decrease compared to the winter. The disease is mainly caused by genes, due to genetic factors in the body, but environmental factors also have a lot of influence.
According to Dr. Linh, there are many reasons for this situation. Polluted smoke and dust, the body’s allergen is more and more. Therefore, according to statistics, the rate of atopic dermatitis is increasing in the total population.
“In addition, people’s living standards are now increasing, most families have air conditioners. Conventional air conditioners will have low humidity, drying the air. Meanwhile, the disease often recurs when the skin is too dry and dehydrated. Therefore, air conditioning is the cause of a lot of winter skin diseases in the summer, “said Dr. Linh.
According to the doctor, the lipid layer on the skin varies from person to person and skin care regimen. If we often bathe, wash our hands and feet a lot, we also lose this lipid layer more. Especially in the summer, we often wash our hands or disinfect to prevent diseases. This leaves many patients with very dry skin in the summer.
Similarly, Dr. Phuong also said that the weather changes erratically, even in May, there are still cold air waves, which is one of the causes of the increase in winter skin diseases in the middle of summer.
Mistakes that make skin diseases increase in the summer
According to Dr. Hoang Thi Phuong, many people think that dry skin needs to apply moisturizer. However, doctors recommend that people with dry skin, atopic dermatitis or skin problems such as itching, allergies, need to add a layer of moisturizer and protect the skin all year round.
“Moisturizing skin between winter and summer is no different. Do not wait until the skin is dry and itchy to moisturize, “the female doctor recommended. Also according to Dr. Hoang Phuong, the misconception of many people is that in the summer, the skin is less dry (due to sweat, drinking a lot of water) so don’t apply moisturizer anymore. However, even in the summer, many patients come to the hospital with extremely dry skin or very thick skin due to lack of skin moisture.

Dr. Thuy Linh also recommends that skin care when sitting in air conditioning is very important. The air in the air conditioner causes the skin to lose more water, so the moisturizing step is very important and needs to be paid more attention.
“The three basic skin care steps are cleansing, moisturizing, and sunscreen. When in an air-conditioned environment, we can use more moisturizer, when sitting for 2-3 hours and finding that the skin is a bit tight, a bit dry, we should use moisturizer again. Besides, you can bring a small mineral spray bottle with you, if you find that your skin is dry, you can spray it, wait for that mineral spray to form a film on the skin, reducing temporary dryness,” said Dr. Linh. .
